CLUB NEWS

26th September –  A SIGNIFICANT BIRTHDAY

The club would like to wish our oldest member, Cecilia Leigh a very Happy Birthday.  I hope we are not giving away any secrets when we reveal that Cecilia is 103 today.  We all hope that you have a lovely day.

5th September – CAPTAINS END OF SEASON REPORT 2017

Thanks to the Captain, President and Vice Captain for their support and enthusiasm throughout the Season.

The Team results however were not quite so good this year with the final tally for the 2017 season being 9 losses and 4 wins.

The results do not in any way reflect the enthusiasm and enjoyment shown by all that took part.

The highlights of the season were of course our retaining The Centenary Putter (which will say on the fireplace for its 4th consecutive year) and an incredible 6-0 win against Wilmslow in the only match that I have missed in the last 5 years! It was also Dave Hudson’s first win in 9 years.

The Hale match this year was again a great CULINARY success and is becoming just an excellent excuse to eat and drink.

A good time was had by all – the fixture is rapidly becoming a legend and will now be played home and away in alternate years.

During the season 38 players took part in the Matches. The Most Valuable Player this season was THE UNDEFEATED Rajesh Desai who played 4 and won 4 winning  home and away in The Centenary Putter.

Notable Individual Results include:-

+4 Rajesh Desai (4 games)

+3 David Schofield (7 games)

+3 Peter McCulloch(5 games)

+ 2 Alan Hewett (8 games)

+2 Stew MacKinnon (9 games)

It has been heartening to note the genuine compliments received from the Visiting Teams regarding the quality and condition of our course and the standard of our catering.  Congratulations and thanks to all those who are involved in maintaining these high standards.

Thanks to Tina, Paul and all of the wonderful Stockport Staff for looking after us, to Adam Harrison and his Staff for their hard work under difficult conditions for the high quality of course presentation throughout the year and to Jayne in the office for always helping with a smile.

Congratulations to all our team players home and away for their enthusiasm and endeavour. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to organise the teams this season.

24 players attended the Final Team Players Competition to celebrate a very enjoyable year and despite the weather we played 18 holes and the atmosphere for both golf and dinner afterwards was fantastic. The Team Competition was won with a score of  82 points (acpo) by Geoff Linnell, Peter McCulloch, Wayne Flaherty, and David Branch (with a significant assist from David Hudson as he stopped them from playing off the wrong tee on the 1st)

Have a great winter and note that it all starts again in May 2018.

18th August. STOCKPORT RETAIN THE CENTENARY PLATE

On 18th August, the Seniors Team retained the Centenary Plate against Bramhall in the second round match at Stockport. Having won away 5 1/2 to 2 1/2 we won at home 4 1/2 to 3 1/2; an overall 10 6 victory.

4th July.  STOCKPORT RETAIN THE CENTENARY PUTTER

Against all the odds, Stockport have retained the Centenary Putter.  Trailing Bramhall 5.5 to 2.5 from the away leg, the match went right down to the wire.  The final halved pairing of Bob Coley and Adam Hussain secured the retention of the Putter.  The score on the night was a reversal of the away fixture ie 5.5 to 2.5 in Stockport’s favour.

The Centenary Putter will now remain on the Mantle Piece for the fourth consecutive year.  CONGRATULATIONS to all involved.

3rd July  STOCKPORT SUMMER BALL

Just a few images from our hugely successful Summer Ball held on 1st July and attended by over 300 members and guests with some guest comments below.  Thanks to all the team for a very special evening.

Charlotte and I thoroughly enjoyed the occasion – the food was a tribute to your catering staff and the whole evening to your Club generally – Charles Shepherd (Royal Liverpool GC)

Everyone who had a hand in the day should be rightly proud of their achievements. It was a great success – John Ainley, Captain SGC

A great occasion.  The food, band and service were excellent – Les & Di Jowsey, Vice Captain & Lady Captain, SGC
